My memory of my initial encounter with the oud is vivid. The Friday prayer and the crowd gradually stood to their feet to form orderly rows of people standing shoulder to shoulder. I noted a strong and distinctive fragrance beginning of the prayer, knowing the unusual scent as a young child. Many years later coming to find it was oud and the core memory of this day imprinted. Powerful and Afdal smell.
